Face Serum VS Face Oil

Face Serum VS Face Oil

Face Serum vs. Face Oil: What’s the Difference and Which Should You Use?

Face serums and oils are both skincare essentials, but they serve different purposes. Here’s a quick guide to help you decide which one (or both!) belongs in your routine.

What is a Face Serum?

A face serum is a lightweight, fast-absorbing product with high concentrations of active ingredients like vitamin C, hyaluronic acid, or peptides. Serums target specific skin concerns—think hydration, brightness, or fine lines—and penetrate deeply into the skin due to their small molecules.

Benefits:

Targets issues like dullness, dark spots, and fine lines.

Absorbs quickly and layers well with other products.

How to Use: After cleansing and toning, apply a few drops of serum. Let it absorb before following with a moisturizer.

What is a Face Oil?

Face oils are thicker and designed to nourish and lock in moisture. Made from natural oils like jojoba or rosehip, they’re rich in essential fatty acids and antioxidants, forming a protective layer on the skin’s surface to prevent moisture loss.

Benefits:

Seals in hydration and protects the skin barrier.

Adds a natural, dewy glow.

How to Use: Apply a few drops as the last step in your skincare routine (or before sunscreen in the morning) to lock in previous products’ moisture.

Should You Use Both?

Yes, if your skin needs it! Use a serum first to target specific concerns, then follow with an oil to seal in moisture. For oily or combination skin, go for lightweight, non-comedogenic oils like rosehip or squalane.
Both serums and oils are beneficial—serums tackle targeted issues, while oils provide lasting hydration and nourishment. Choose based on your skin’s needs, or try layering both for a balanced glow!
